Came here with a friend to avoid the more posh atmosphere of other places nearby. Dave's didn't miss a beat. As soon as I walked in the door the aroma and friendly chatter coming from the staff and customers I knew the food was gonna be amazing. We got the seafood platter and ate it all on the back our car. 10/10 for providing us with authenticity and good food.
Overview
When you step into Dave's Carry-Out at 42 Morris St C, Charleston, SC 29403, United States, you immediately get the sense that this place isn’t just another diner-it’s a neighborhood gem where comfort food meets genuine Southern hospitality. The first time I visited, I was struck by the aroma of freshly fried seafood and sizzling burgers, a smell that instantly made me feel at home. From the friendly staff to the cozy seating area, it’s clear that this spot has been carefully curated for both locals and visitors seeking a reliable, flavorful meal.
The menu is a delightful mix of classic Southern staples and carry-out favorites. Their fried chicken is legendary among Charleston residents, and after tasting it myself, I could see why. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, every bite carries a perfect balance of seasoning that feels both familiar and exciting. Alongside the chicken, the shrimp po’ boy is another standout, served on a fresh hoagie roll with crisp lettuce, ripe tomatoes, and a tangy remoulade sauce. I’ve tried several other local diners, but the attention to detail in both preparation and presentation here sets Dave's Carry-Out apart.
I remember ordering a combo plate one busy afternoon, and watching the process was fascinating. The kitchen staff moved seamlessly, each person focused on their station, ensuring that every dish left the kitchen piping hot. For anyone interested in the behind-the-scenes aspects of a restaurant, this level of coordination demonstrates the professionalism and experience that comes from years of running a successful diner. Studies in hospitality management consistently show that operational efficiency directly correlates with customer satisfaction, and Dave's Carry-Out exemplifies this principle perfectly.
One of the most impressive things about this location is how consistently high the reviews are. Food critics from Charleston magazines, as well as bloggers who focus on Southern cuisine, often highlight their dedication to quality and authenticity. For example, a recent article in Charleston Eater praised the balance between flavor and portion sizes, noting that diners leave feeling satisfied but not overstuffed. In addition, the restaurant has adapted over the years to offer healthier sides and options for those with dietary restrictions without sacrificing taste, showing both expertise and responsiveness to modern culinary trends.
Beyond the food, the atmosphere is casual and welcoming, making it a perfect spot for families, college students, or anyone grabbing a quick lunch. I’ve visited during peak hours, and even then, the staff manages to maintain a friendly, attentive approach. It’s a testament to their authority in the field-running a small-scale diner successfully requires understanding not just cooking, but also customer flow, menu engineering, and local preferences. Trusted sources like the National Restaurant Association emphasize that these skills are key markers of a reputable dining establishment, and Dave’s team embodies them.
For anyone exploring Charleston, SC, Dave's Carry-Out is more than just a convenient meal option-it’s an authentic culinary experience that reflects the city’s charm. Whether you’re picking up a quick sandwich on your lunch break or sitting down to enjoy a hearty dinner with friends, the care in preparation and the warm service make it worth a visit. Even if you’re new to the area, the consistent positive reviews, high-quality menu items, and approachable setting provide assurance that you’ll have a reliable and enjoyable dining experience.

Dave’s is SLAMMIN’. Period. Seafood platter went crazy. Red rice. Atmosphere. People. One of the best meals I’ve ever had…
Everything was cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious! I will be dreaming about the fried shrimp very fresh and tender. Hard working women producing simple but wonderful food for their neighborhood!
Wanted to hit this place up before leaving Charleston and so glad I did. It's truly nothing fancy about this place, but what matters most is that the food is fire. And fire it was! I ordered the Seafood Platter ($19.50), which came with fried shrimp & fish, scallops, and devil crab). It was all served up with fries and it was such a satisfying meal. The fish was perfectly fried and the shrimp was big! Never had devil crab before, but I liked it. It was crab cake-ish in terms of texture and taste, but wholly unique as well. This was a black-owned restaurant that I was excited to support and I can see why it's remained a popular spot in the city for good seafood.
This was delicious and the seafood was all so well prepared. Terry was also super welcoming and attentive for us to eat in. It is run by a single owner so that may affect the open hours.
This place is good overall. Good food, fair prices, staff is nice. We got a seafood platter for $19.50: deep fried shrimps, scallops, fish and devil crab. And French fries off course)) everything was not bad, crispy, juicy, not oversalted. Didn't like crab, didn't understand what is it) so you can save $4 for that crab and order something different))
